Intel, Micron Announce NAND Flash Memory at 5X Speeds

February 13th, 2008 No comments

The new technology boasts 200 MB/sec read rates and a 100 MB/sec write rates; current technologies off 40 MB/sec and 20 MB/sec rates of current single level cell NAND. This 5-fold increase in speeds is a least partially due to the new ONFI 2.0 standards which, according to the Open NAND Flash Interface Working Group, reduces the time required to transfer data to and from the data buffer by using Double Data Rate signaling and source synchronous clocks that accurately latch signals enabling higher frequencies to be realized.

Scientists commonly use baker’s yeast in studies involving aging because it is simple and one of the best understood organisms at a molecular and genetic level. Researchers from the University of Southern California (USC) have created a baker’s yeast that has a lifespan 10-times that of normal baker’s yeast.

Current NOR and NAND flash memory can usually withstand 100,000 and 1,000,000 cycles respectively before the media begins to degrade. But memory products using PCM technology have a much higher endurance with a tolerance of about 100 million cycles before the effects of degradation become evident.

Solar Activity Diminishes; Researchers Predict Another Ice Age

February 10th, 2008 No comments

Source: Dailytech

Dr. Kenneth Tapping is worried about the sun. Solar activity comes in regular cycles, but the latest one is refusing to start. Sunspots have all but vanished, and activity is suspiciously quiet. The last time this happened was 400 years ago — and it signaled a solar event known as a “Maunder Minimum,” along with the start of what we now call the “Little Ice Age
