DailyTech – U.S. to Restart Work on Space-Based Missile Defenses
The U.S. announced last year that its ground-based Star Wars’ missile defense system was operational and ready for use, though capable at present of covering only parts of the U.S. Plans to expand the system in Europe are under way.
DailyTech – Black Silicon Could Usher in Huge Improvements in Solar Cells, Consumer Electronics
Black silicon offers up to 500 times more light sensitivity than normal silicon
Black silicon was later found to have extreme sensitivity to light and is on the verge of commercialization for use in night vision systems. James Carey, co-founder of SiOnyx, said, “We have seen a 100 to 500 times increase in sensitivity to light compared to conventional silicon detectors.”

DailyTech – Spacecraft in Orbit Around Venus Scans Earth for Signs of Life
Analysis of the data gleaned by Venus Express about the Earth is only in the first stages of being analyzed. Scientists hope to determine from the data if the Earth’s red edge is visible from a distance.
Scientists are finding distant planets at an impressive rate; over 300 extrasolar planets have been discovered since 1995, and we get closer to finding Earth-like planets every day. Data from the Venus Express could help the scientists determine if life on Earth-like planets actually exists.
DailyTech – Government Shuts Down Massive Spam Group
Credit card transactions were processed in Cyprus and Georgia, and all products were shipped from India and China, with Chinese web servers used to host each web site.
The group’s largest botnet, Mega-D, had 35,000 zombie PCs capable of sending 10 billion e-mail messages per day, according to security firm Marshal Software.
Estimates indicate as much as 90 percent of all e-mail sent across the world is spam.
High tech shoe generates electricity | Japan Probe
The shoes have a small generator attached to water-filled soles. Each step puts pressure on the soles, causing the water to spin a small turbine and generate power, NTT said. The futuristic shoes currently generate 1.2 watts of electricity, “a level sufficient to run an iPod mobile music player forever, as long as the wearer keeps walking,” said spokesman Hideomi Tenma.
Good Quality Applications Built With Delphi – Delphi.
I’m often asked why I develop software with Delphi and not move to a “modern” language like the bulky and shitty .NET framework or such. Most people believe Delphi is an old product of the 90’s which isn’t used anymore. While it’s true that its use had dimishined after the .net fiasco, users of the old mighty version 7 are migrating to 2007 and now 2009 and it’s getting some focus again.
Delphi keeps evolving and a new version just came out last month. The native compiled code is as fast as a C++ application.
Here are some very well known applications developed with it: ( a few that I recognize out of hundreds )
- Ad-Aware
- KMPlayer
- Auslogics Disk Defrag
- MYSQL Admin
- Spybot Search & Destroy
- Inno Setup
- SKYPE (sold for $2.6 Billion)
- Winace archiver
- AIMP2
- BS Player
- WINRAR
- CloneCD
- Zoom Player
- Dev-C++
- XVI32
- Top Style Pro
- Partition Magic
- DynDNS Updater
- PE Explorer
- Resource Hacker
- PortableApps
- Magic ISO
- ImgBurn
- AudioGrabber
- Goldwave
- Easy CD-DA Extractor

DailyTech – Breakthrough With Thermoelectric Compound Could Lead to Better Materials
A new discovery made in thermoelectrical crystal compounds helps explain heat conduction at the molecular scale.
DailyTech – Researchers Develop Carbon Nanotube Filtration Systems
UNC research helps explain the properties of water at very small scales in very small objects.
DailyTech – Working Quantum Encryption System Hailed as Unbreakable
Quantum encryption uses photons to deliver encryption keys
The system sends faint beams of light containing single photons fired a million times per second from which a numerical key can be recovered. The advantage of the system is that if anyone eavesdrops on the communication between nodes the key is disturbed and the node shuts down. At the same time the hacked node shuts down the network is routed to another node to keep it running.
DailyTech – Ozone Hole in 2008 Outgrows 2007 Hole
In 2008 the European Space Agency (ESA) reported that the ozone hole over the Antarctic grew in both size and amount of ozone lost from 2007. While still not as large as the hole in 2006, the hole marks the reverse of a year of gains.
DailyTech – Researchers Want LED “Hot Spots” to Replace Wi-Fi
New research from Boston University’s College of Engineering, funded by a National Science Foundation grant, indicates that LEDs may be not only the integral lighting component of the future, but may also form the backbone of future wireless networks.
DailyTech – Nanoparticles Can Slip Through Skin, Researchers Find
A paper published by University of Rochester Medical Center researchers now confirms that at least one kind of nanoparticle can penetrate a human’s most resistant line of defense against foreign particles: the skin.
